You ask: "How do I think of God and what He is?".
I answer: "I don't know".
You can know all creatures and their works, and know the works of God in which he is reflected.
But you cannot think of God Himself. Leave everything that you can think of and love what you cannot think of. For He can be loved, but not thought. He can be held in love, but not thought.
So while the kindness of God, the majesty of God, the mercy of God are useful parts of contemplation, in this exercise you must cast them away and cover them with a cloud of forgetting.
Instead with a strong, devout, and impulsive love try to pierce the darkness above. Try to pierce the cloud of unknowing with a sharp dart of longing love.
